Report: Newcastle now close to deal for 'top-class' 26-year-old
Newcastle United are well on their way to ensuring that they will have multiple signings to announce on the final day of the January transfer window, with 90min reporting that they are close to signing Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa.
The Magpies have certainly done a good job of overhauling their squad this month. They have now completed three signings. And it would appear that Dan Burn is set to become their fourth addition of the window.
It was reported on Sunday that the Brighton defender is set to undergo a medical. And he may not be the only Premier League defender to join the Magpies just before the deadline.
Reports also claimed that Newcastle had registered an interest in Targett. The Aston Villa star has fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of Lucas Digne.
It was suggested however, that a move to St James’ Park was unlikely. But it would now appear that there has been a breakthrough.
90min is now reporting that Targett is close to sealing a loan move to Newcastle. Villa granted the left-back’s representatives permission to head to Tyneside to hold talks today. And discussions have moved in the right direction.
Newcastle landing ‘top-class’ Targett on loan could be a brilliant piece of business
It is a smart piece of business for Newcastle to land Targett. He has impressed since moving to Villa Park.
The Magpies do have options in that left-back role. But it would be hard to argue with the supporters who believe that Targett would be an upgrade on who is available to Eddie Howe.
He also looks to have the desire to prove a beneficial figure to have amongst the squad. Just recently, Steven Gerrard labelled his reaction to losing his place to Digne ‘top-class‘.
His comments make it a surprise that Villa have seemingly sanctioned his potential exit. But that decision could certainly prove to be Newcastle’s gain.
