Report: Newcastle make contact with Antero Henrique over sporting director role
Newcastle United have been in initial contact with Antero Henrique about the sporting director position at St James’ Park, according to a report from Foot Mercato.
The Magpies’ new owners are continuing to get to grips with their new surroundings. And it does appear that big changes could be in the offing.
It was reported over the weekend that Steve Bruce is expected to be moved on before Newcastle take on Tottenham this weekend.
It remains to be seen who the club appoint as their new manager. But Graeme Jones is expected to take charge for the time-being.
One role they have made some progress in their attempts to fill is sporting director, it seems.
According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle are interested in Henrique. And it is suggested that he has had some contact from those who represent the club’s new owners.
The Portuguese has been out of work since 2019. He spent two years at Paris Saint-Germain as sporting director.
He was in a similar role for nine years at Porto after being appointed in 2005. Henrique had already been at the club for 15 years before that promotion.
Henrique definitely a very successful sporting director amid Newcastle links
Obviously, it is difficult to get carried away with Henrique’s achievements during his time at Parc des Princes.
They won the Ligue 1 title in the two years he was in Paris. And of course, they missed out on the trophy the year after his departure.
But Porto won the league title seven times during his tenure as sporting director. They also clinched the Europa League in 2011.
So you can certainly see why Newcastle may be looking at him now.
