The Daily Mail have claimed that Newcastle United are interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dion Sanderson this summer. The £2million-rated centre-back spent last season loan at The Toon’s North East rivals Sunderland. Now, Newcastle have been keeping an eye on him.
Sanderson, 21, has impressed during the second half of his season-long loan spell at the Stadium of Light. The centre-back played 27 times for Sunderland – but did start 15 consecutive matches between February and April. A run in which Sunderland won nine and were unbeaten for 12.
The report states that Sunderland have had a permanent £1million bid rejected, with Wolves wanting £2million. Six Championship clubs are keen – in Millwall, Luton, Cardiff, Birmingham, Sheffield United and Stoke. But it is also claimed that Newcastle are keeping tabs on the defender.

Sanderson impressive, a bargain for Newcastle at £2m
While it was only League One, Sanderson did well for Sunderland. Injury hampered the final few weeks of his stay in Wearside – but the overall feeling is that he did well. Obviously, the proof is in Sunderland looking to get him on a permanent basis. But Sanderson might be looking higher.
The defender is probably ready for the Championship. But Newcastle might see that as an opportunity. Rather than having to spend a much bigger fee in the future, signing Sanderson and loaning him to one of the Championship clubs makes sense. He could be a real gem in the future.
Certainly, he is a bargain at £2million and Wolves fans think he is worth a whole lot more.
