Newcastle United continue to hold an interest in Mauricio Pochettino with the Argentinian expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain imminently, according to a report from The Times.

Pochettino will reportedly be sacked by the Ligue 1 side. He led the club back to the league title this season. However, they, once again, failed to end their wait to get their hands on the Champions League trophy.

Reports on Sunday claimed that Pochettino has remained in contact with Daniel Levy with the Tottenham chairman keen to convince him to return to North London.

That may become significant as The Times reports that Antonio Conte is open to taking the job at Parc des Princes. Clearly, Pochettino would be the man for many if Conte decided to leave Tottenham.

But Spurs may face competition if they do make a fresh move for Pochettino at any stage. The Times notes that Newcastle still have a longstanding interest in Pochettino.

Eddie Howe’s stock is incredibly high right now. He has led Newcastle to safety in the Premier League. And they have done so by winning 10 of their last 14 games, including their last four.

Howe’s job is unlikely to be under any threat right now. But the fact that Newcastle remain admirers of Pochettino does highlight the kind of pressure he is now under.

The Magpies want to continue moving up the table. And Howe is unproven at the sharp end of the Premier League. Pochettino meanwhile, took Tottenham to the brink of glory on several fronts.

He did an ‘incredible‘ job with Spurs. And Newcastle may well feel that he is the right man if Howe is unable to take the club to that next level.
