Report: Newcastle interest in Armando Broja has cooled over demands
Newcastle United’s interest in Armando Broja has cooled after Chelsea demanded that the Albania international is given the first-choice striker role at any club he joins on loan this summer, according to a report from The Telegraph.
The Magpies are still working on bolstering their attacking options in this window. Eddie Howe is yet to welcome a first-team addition who is not a goalkeeper or defender.
Reports have suggested that Newcastle are amongst the sides who want Broja. The 20-year-old showed a lot of promise during a loan spell at Southampton last season.
He could be involved in Chelsea’s first-team plans this coming year. But it seems that Thomas Tuchel is open to loaning him out should they receive an offer from a club able to provide assurances over game-time.
Newcastle however, are not willing to offer those assurances. In fact, The Telegraph reports that their interest has now cooled because Chelsea wanted a guarantee that he would be first-choice.
The Magpies wanted to use Broja as cover for Callum Wilson. And with that, they are now considering other options – including Broja’s £45 million Chelsea teammate Timo Werner.
Newcastle interest in Broja has cooled
Broja would have been an excellent addition for Newcastle. He was labelled ‘sensational‘ while on the south coast last year. And it is clear that he has an incredibly high ceiling.
However, Newcastle are right to back away over Chelsea’s demands. He is not the finished article just yet. Certainly, Southampton fans largely feel that he did not offer enough over the course of the whole campaign.
Should Wilson stay fit, he is obviously an outstanding option for Newcastle. And Broja is not ready to consistently start ahead of him.
Newcastle definitely need another goalscorer. But you can understand why they are now looking elsewhere.
