Report: Newcastle hope 3-goal PL star will sign by next weekend
Newcastle United are hoping to poach Chris Wood away from Burnley this week, with The Telegraph reporting that the striker wants to join the Magpies.
The optimism Eddie Howe’s men may have felt following the arrival of Kieran Trippier has largely evaporated. Newcastle were knocked out of the FA Cup by Cambridge on Saturday.
The result highlighted the work ahead. And one of the areas that require urgent attention is up front. They are set to be without Callum Wilson for eight weeks due to injury.
The one positive to emerge from yesterday’s shock is that it appears to have inspired the club to step up their push to bring new signings through the door.
And interestingly, it appears that signing Wood has become a priority. The Telegraph reports they have made an approach for the Clarets star. And it is claimed that he wants to move to St James’ Park.
Newcastle now plan to step their interest up a gear. They want a striker through the door before they face Watford next weekend.
Chris Wood could be an outstanding signing for Newcastle
Wood is perhaps not the most exciting name to have been linked with Newcastle. He has only scored three goals in 17 Premier League starts this season.
However, he has proved to be a brilliant signing for Burnley. He has reached double figures for league goals in every season he has been at Turf Moor. And he arrived off the back of a 27-goal campaign in the Championship.
And obviously, signing him from Burnley would leave one of their relegation rivals much weaker.
Alan Shearer once said that he was ‘horrible to play against‘. So he would presumably welcome Newcastle targeting the New Zealander.
Burnley will surely not make it easy for the Magpies to get their man, however.
