Report: 'Exceptional' Arsenal target would be Newcastle's ideal striker signing

Newcastle United have identified Arsenal target Alexander Isak as their ideal striker signing, but the Daily Mail suggests that the Magpies are pursuing other names during the January transfer window.

It looks to be absolutely imperative that Newcastle sign a new goalscorer this month. Callum Wilson is set to be sidelined for eight weeks due to a calf injury, according to The Athletic.

Of course, Magpies fans needed no reminder of the battle they face. But the importance of this month has increased following their surprise loss to Cambridge in the FA Cup on Saturday.

One of their main problems in that game was capitalising while on top. And they are now on a run of four goals in their last eight games in all competitions.

So it is no surprise that they appear to be stepping up their pursuit of a striker. The Daily Mail reports that they have spoken to Marseille about a £15 million move for Bamba Dieng. And they remain keen on Sardar Azmoun at Zenit.

However, the Daily Mail has hinted that their dream target may be beyond them. It is suggested that they would ideally like to rival the Gunners for Isak.

Newcastle convincing Arsenal target Alexander Isak to join them would be major coup

Isak has actually not had the most prolific season with Real Sociedad. In fact, he has only scored four times in 17 La Liga games. He has been a little better in the Europa League, scoring three in five in that competition.

But he went into this season off the back of a brilliant 12 months. He bagged 17 goals in Spain’s top-flight. And he was superb for Sweden at Euro 2020. He was labelled an ‘exceptional talent‘ by Gary Lineker after one of his appearances at the tournament.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal or Newcastle do make a move this month. But you would imagine that an Emirates switch would appeal to Isak a lot more right now.

Mikel Arteta’s side are moving in the right direction. And there is an opportunity for a striker to sign and establish themselves as first-choice.

Newcastle meanwhile, look to need a brilliant window just to give themselves a good chance of getting out of trouble.
