Report: Newcastle have now made contact over signing another England international as well as James Maddison

Newcastle United have made contact over signing Harvey Barnes from Leicester City, as well as James Maddison.

The Guardian claim that Maddison is not the only Foxes player of interest to the Magpies as they continue their search for creativity.

Last month, it was reported that Leicester want £50 million to part with Barnes, but their summer recruitment has been hamstrung by an inability move players on.

Barnes made his England debut in October 2020, coming on as a second half substitute in a win over Wales at Wembley.

Brendan Rodgers has articulated his reluctance to sell Maddison amid interest from the north east and it is hard to see that he would be much more willing to lose Barnes.

But the problem for Leicester is that the players they are willing to sell to create funds and space in the squad for new arrivals are not generating the interest they had hoped.

So they may have to consider a big-money sale of a top player to kickstart their summer business with the new Premier League season looming into view.

They have sold their top talent for big bucks before and smartly reinvested the money, and they may be forced to do the same again here.

Barnes would offer speed and directness from the wing, and could be trying to make a late push to get into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

He is still only 24, which means his best years are ahead of him and he is already a hugely talented and dangerous Premier League forward.
