Newcastle United face a battle with Chelsea for the signature of Brighton defender Adam Webster, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (13/2; page 66).

The Magpies signed one Seagulls centre-back during the January transfer window. Eddie Howe’s men recruited Dan Burn, who is still awaiting the chance to make his debut.

It was reported towards the end of the month that Newcastle wanted Webster, too. The 27-year-old joined the club in a club-record deal back in 2019. And he has been a stalwart of the side since.

Graham Potter has previously described him as a ‘fantastic‘ player.

Brighton now look set to face a big battle to keep the former Portsmouth man.

The Sunday Mirror (13/2; page 66) suggests that Newcastle continue to monitor Webster. However, Chelsea are also interested in signing the defender.

The Blues could lose Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen in the summer. So an overhaul could well be on the cards at Stamford Bridge in the coming months.

Adam Webster faces tough decision as Newcastle and Chelsea consider bids

It will be interesting to see where Webster ends up. Clearly, turning down Chelsea is going to be incredibly difficult, particularly if they have several defensive slots open up this summer.

But Newcastle cannot be ruled out either. It has been suggested that the Magpies appointing Dan Ashworth may hand them a boost in their bid to sign Yves Bissouma.

So it could have a similar impact on their push for Webster.

And of course, he could decide to stay at Brighton.

It would be a statement for Newcastle to sign Webster ahead of Chelsea. But at some stage, they are going to start signings those players also wanted by Europe’s biggest heavyweights.

Perhaps it will be a sign of what is to come should they manage to land Webster.
