Report: Newcastle register interest in 'fantastic' 27-year-old PL star

Newcastle United have registered an interest in signing Brighton defender Adam Webster ahead of the final days of the January transfer window, according to a report from the Daily Express.

The Magpies are likely to be the Premier League side everyone keeps an eye on up until the deadline. They have made two signings so far. And more will surely follow.

Certainly, signing a new centre-back is likely to be a priority for Eddie Howe. And it appears that they have their on one player who has been outstanding in the top-flight for some time.

DROGBA DID WORSE THAN LUKAKU

Webster joined Brighton for a then-club-record fee of £20 million back in 2019. His form this season prompted Jamie Carragher to suggest that he was the best English centre-back when it comes to playing out from the back with both feet. And Graham Potter has labelled him a ‘fantastic‘ player.

Unsurprisingly, like teammate Yves Bissouma, he is attracting attention. The Daily Express reports that Newcastle are keen on signing the 27-year-old. He would address the Magpies’ issues in that left centre-back spot.

Newcastle surely unlikely to have any success with Adam Webster pursuit in this window

Newcastle signing Webster would be a fantastic piece of business. He seems to be at the peak of his powers right now. And it would appear that an England call-up may not be too far away.

Having said that, it is hard to see why Webster may want to make the move in this window. Of course, any player joining Newcastle can expect to be offered incredibly lucrative terms.

But Brighton are on for a brilliant season. They sit ninth in the table right now. And only four teams have conceded fewer goals than Potter’s side this term.

Any interest in Webster is likely to still be around in the summer. So it is hard to imagine that he would be prepared to leave the Seagulls for a relegation battle in this window.

It would certainly be a huge statement if Newcastle could attract Webster to Tyneside.
