Report: Newcastle could now offer club swap-deal for ‘brilliant’ player, they’ve had two bids rejected already

Newcastle United have launched an attempt to sign Leicester City‘s James Maddison this summer, and according to the Daily Mail, they could now offer the club a swap-deal for the player after having two bids rejected already

The Foxes will reject Newcastle’s latest offer of around £40 million for ‘brilliant’ Maddison after an initial bid of £35 million last week.

But with Leicester holding firm on their £60 million valuation of the midfielder, Newcastle could now turn to a player swap deal.

As Brendan Rodgers looks set to lose goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to OGC Nice, the Foxes are apparently interested in Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.  And Eddie Howe’s side could try and use this in their attempt to land Maddison.

Swap-deal for Maddison

The Daily Mail reports that Rodgers will have to sell players this summer before he is given funds to bolster his team and clubs have shown interest in Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Wesley Fofana.

The Magpies are said to have a lower budget during the current transfer window, so they may have to think outside the box in their bid to sign Maddison.

This could include a deal structure with future payments, or with a player involved and heading the other way to Leicester.

Leicester have shown interest in bringing Dubravka to the club and Newcastle could yet use the Slovakian in a new offer for Maddison, especially after signing Nick Pope from Burnley this summer.

TBR’s View: Leicester unlikely to accept swap-deal

It doesn’t seem likely that Rodgers would accept a swap deal, despite their potential need to sign a goalkeeper this summer if Schmeichel departs for France.

If Leicester need to raise funds for Rodgers to be able to improve his team, then it would make no sense for them to accept a lower fee for one of their star players like Maddison

Reports have suggested that Maddison’s representatives are encouraging Newcastle to bid for him but the Foxes seem adamant that they will not budge on their valuation of the player.

The 25-year-old was a key player for Rodgers last season as he scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists for Leicester. If the Magpies really want the Englishman, they’ll probably have to pay the fee that is demanded.
