Report: Newcastle could now bid for Rennes striker Gaetan Laborde

Newcastle United have been monitoring Rennes striker Gaetan Laborde for several months, and Foot Mercato reports that the Magpies could now make a bid for the 28-year-old.

The Magpies are continuing to push for their first attacking signing this summer. Eddie Howe’s side have been linked with a host of names.

Reports on Monday claimed that Newcastle plan to make an imminent bid for Goncalo Ramos. And the offer is set to go close to Benfica’s £33.8 million asking price for the youngster.

But there are other names in the frame. And Laborde is another on their radar.

Foot Mercato reports that Rennes could sell the forward following the arrival of Arnaud Kalimuendo. Kalimuendo, of course, was on Newcastle’s wishlist earlier in the window.

Lille are particularly interested in Laborde. But Foot Mercato reports that Newcastle and Sevilla have also had their eye on the former Bordeaux man for several months. And they could now confirm their interest with a bid.

Newcastle could now bid for Laborde

Laborde has never been the most prolific striker during his career. He averages less than a goal every three games across all competitions.

But he has now reached double figures in three different Ligue 1 campaigns, including last year, where he scored 15 times.

And he offers a lot more than goals to Rennes’ team. He has contributed 30 assists in almost 200 Ligue 1 games during his career. And he works incredibly hard off the ball.

His asking price could be as low as £16.9 million, according to Foot Mercato. So it is not the biggest risk for Newcastle.

And of course, they have recently had success when making a signing from Ligue 1. Perhaps that will come into their thinking as they consider a deal for Laborde.
