Report: Newcastle considering £15m Youri Tielemans move in January

Newcastle United are considering a £15 million move for Youri Tielemans during the January transfer window, and the Sunday Mirror (25/9; page 77) reports that the Magpies hope that they have an ace up their sleeve in the race.

Perhaps surprisingly, Tielemans remains a Leicester City player. Of course, his name was linked with almost everyone during the summer window.

Reports before the window opened claimed that Arsenal were growing increasingly confident of signing the Belgian. Meanwhile, Newcastle were also linked with a move at various points.

However, the Foxes’ asking price for a player out of contract next summer seemingly put most off. And with that, Tielemans’ future remains very much up in the air.

It would not be a huge shock to see him leave in January – depending on Leicester’s position in the table. Some sides will surely deem paying the money ahead of the final six months of his contract worthwhile.

And it appears that Newcastle are one side who may look to make Leicester an offer. According to the Sunday Mirror (25/9; page 77), the Magpies are weighing up making a £15 million bid for the 25-year-old in January.

It is not clear whether Brendan Rodgers’ side will accept. But it does appear that Newcastle hope that they have an advantage over any other admirers.

The report notes that Tielemans worked with Newcastle coach Graeme Jones in the Belgium national team for two years. And they hope that the opportunity to be reunited with Jones will help their cause.

Newcastle considering £15 million move for Tielemans

Leicester could be in a difficult position when it comes to Tielemans in January. Should they remain in trouble, they will have to weigh up whether a £15 million boost to their transfer kitty would be more beneficial than having Tielemans for the rest of the campaign.

For Newcastle, it could be a really shrewd signing. He is an ‘special‘ talent who has previously shone at the very highest level.

Surely, for Eddie Howe’s side, it would be yet another step in the right direction.
