Everton have seen an enquiry for Jesse Lingard knocked back by Manchester United, while The Telegraph reports that Newcastle are backing away from a loan move over a demand for a £12 million fee should the Magpies remain in the Premier League.
Lingard looks set to be one of the key protagonists ahead of the final days of the January transfer window. It had appeared that Newcastle may be favourites for a loan deal after both West Ham and Tottenham had seen moves rejected.

In fact, it was reported this week that the Magpies were prepared to offer Lingard a contract worth £150,000-a-week while on loan.
However, The Telegraph has now claimed that talks over a temporary deal are at a standstill. That is because Manchester United want a £12 million fee should Lingard help keep Eddie Howe’s side in the top-flight.

Newcastle meanwhile, are prepared to pay £2.5 million as an initial fee.
Interestingly, The Telegraph adds that Everton have also failed in a bid to sign Lingard. But it is not clear whether the Toffees plan to reignite their interest.
Newcastle signing Lingard would now be an even bigger blow for Everton
Certainly, you would imagine that Newcastle are still in pole position. If any side is going to be prepared to meet United’s financial demands, it is surely the Magpies.
But clearly, agreeing to pay £12 million in a loan deal does not look to be the most impressive business. Having said that, Newcastle may not mind at all if Lingard manages to ensure that they remain in the Premier League.
Everton would be particularly disappointed if Lingard heads to Tyneside. The Toffees are not yet out of trouble. So seeing a side below them land Lingard would be difficult to stomach.
Alan Shearer labelled Lingard a stunning player while he was on loan at West Ham. So it should be no surprise if plenty of sides make big plays for him before the deadline.
