Report: Mourinho wanted Pierluigi Gollini at Spurs

Jose Mourinho is keen to sign Pierluigi Gollini, with Italian outlet Calciomercato reporting that the Roma boss wanted the goalkeeper while he was at Spurs.

According to Calciomercato, Mourinho is on the lookout for a new stopper as he prepares for his first year in charge of the Giallorossi.

And it appears that one of the names on his radar is Gollini. The 26-year-old is going into the summer off the back of an impressive year with Atalanta.

Just two goalkeepers in Serie A kept a greater number of clean sheets this past year – and he made 12 fewer starts than both Samir Handanovic and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Calciomercato reports that he is wanted by Roma. But interestingly, the report also claims that Mourinho wanted him at Tottenham during his tenure.

Had Gollini moved to North London, Spurs would have been the third English club of his career.

He spent two years on Manchester United’s books as a youngster, and he returned to English football in 2016, joining Aston Villa.

Remarkably, his time at Villa proved to be a real disappointment. He only made 20 appearances in the Championship.

Ultimately, he left on loan for Atalanta, but his switch was made permanent for just £3.75 million, according to BBC Sport.

Gollini has proved point, earning place on Mourinho wishlist at Spurs

Gollini has since shown that he was written off too soon at Villa.

Spurs face a massive decision with their goalkeeper situation in the coming years.

Hugo Lloris has been one of the best Premier League goalkeepers of all-time, but he is now 34.

He has reportedly rejected a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. So his time at the club may be coming to an end.

Replacing him is going to be a huge ask for Spurs, and perhaps Mourinho felt Gollini could be that man.
