The Daily Mail claim that Manchester United sent goalkeeping scout Tony Coton to watch Leeds United stopper Illan Meslier on Tuesday night. Of course, the Frenchman conceded seven goals, as Manchester City ran riot.

Meslier, 21, clocked up 66th senior outing for Leeds on Tuesday night. An impressive total for a goalkeeper at his age given the standard in which he is playing at. He has kept 23 clean sheets during that time.

France Under-21 goalkeeper Meslier has certainly caught the eye at Leeds. Initially signed on loan from Lorient, he played an important part in Leeds gaining promotion – replacing Kiko Casilla towards the end of 2019-20.

Since then, he has been the club’s undisputed no.1. He has played 52 of his side’s 55 Premier League games since promotion, conceding 84 goals – but that is more down to the way Marcelo Bielsa likes to play.

Indeed, there was proof of that at The Etihad in front of Coton. The United scout watched £5million (YEP) signing Meslier concede seven. The Frenchman still earned praise from his own fans on Twitter.

Manchester United eye Leeds goalkeeper Meslier: The details

The report states that Meslier is seen as a long-term target by United. Despite the rivalry, Meslier is being targeted in case David De Gea or Dean Henderson leave in the next 12 months. Both having interest in his services.

De Gea is out of contract in 2023 and has been constantly linked with a return to Spain. England stopper Henderson is a target for the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham. Would Meslier leave Leeds for Manchester United? Time will tell.
