Manchester City are reportedly convinced they will sign Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane.

What’s the story?

According to the Evening Standard, the Citizens are confident the Englishman will become a City player in due course.

The England international is Pep Guardiola’s top target for the remainder of this window. However, it has emerged the club are refusing to enter negotiations for free agent Lionel Messi.

While City focuses on Kane, the Lilywhites are in talks over a £60m deal for Lautaro Martinez. But, it is said the Argentine would partner the 28-year-old rather than replace him.

Kane seems to be heading for the Tottenham exit door in what is a boost for Manchester City.

Saturday’s Community Shield really did heighten concern over the lack of a number nine. City struggled to create clear cut chances as they lost to Leicester.

Across the 90 minutes, the northwest giants had an xG of just 1.08, highlighting how out of sorts the team were.

As a result, it makes landing a centre-forward an important issue for Guardiola. Signing a striker has become even more crucial with Chelsea close to reuniting with Romelu Lukaku.
