Report: Liverpool now on pole position to sign £43.8m striker next summer
Gakpo has made an absolutely unbelievable start to the campaign. Few forwards in Europe have been in better form so far this term.
The 23-year-old has scored 13 goals and contributed 17 assists in 24 games in all competitions. In the Eredivisie, he has scored nine and provided 12 assists in just 14 games.
Liverpool on pole position for Cody Gakpo
Unsurprisingly, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding Gakpo in recent months.
He was heavily linked with a Premier League move in the summer. Gakpo told The Times that he held talks with Manchester United. Meanwhile, he had a chance to join either Leeds or Southampton on deadline day.
Calciomercato reports that Leeds offered nearly £43.8 million (€50 million) for Gakpo. But supporters of those clubs will likely accept that their chance to sign the striker has now been and gone.
A move to England may well still be on the cards. In fact, Calciomercato reports that Liverpool are on pole position to sign Gakpo.
The report adds that he will leave The Netherlands next summer.
Gakpo would have the potential to be an amazing signing for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp’s men are in the process of overhauling their squad after so much success over the years.
Darwin Nunez is showing some really bright signs following his summer switch. And they have some really talented young players who will be outstanding in the coming years.
Obviously, there is an element of risk attached to signing Gakpo given the standard of the Dutch league. But Liverpool fans do not need reminding of the gems which can be found in that division.
Gakpo is definitely looking one of the latest. He appears to be a ‘special‘ talent. And it seems that Liverpool are hoping to get him through the door next summer.
