Report: Liverpool make January decision on 24-year-old Steven Gerrard wants to sign
Liverpool will not allow Joe Gomez to leave Anfield during the January transfer window, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (5/12; page 71).
Gomez has been a peripheral figure for the Reds this season. He has only featured in two Premier League games so far, proving to be an unused substitute on eight occasions.
More recently, he has been sidelined with a calf injury. But that has not stopped speculation over his future arising.
In fact, it was recently reported that Steven Gerrard wants to take the 24-year-old to Aston Villa.
However, Gerrard is set for disappointment if he does indeed attempt to try and sign Gomez in some capacity next month.
The Sunday Mirror (5/12; page 71) reports that there is zero chance of Gomez being allowed to leave. It is noted that his versatility makes him particularly valuable to Jurgen Klopp’s men.
It is also claimed that Klopp is taking a cautious approach with Gomez after he missed the large majority of last season due to injury.
Liverpool will be vindicated for keeping Joe Gomez at some stage
As things stand, Gomez is probably a little further down the pecking order than he would like. However, he only needs to look at some of his teammates for inspiration.
Virgil van Dijk was alongside him on the sidelines last term. And yet, the Dutchman has taken little time to start looking like a Rolls Royce once again. In fact, he is playing better than he had been at the start of last season.
Joel Matip meanwhile, had been written off by many in the past. But he is arguably playing the best football of his Liverpool career this season.
That obviously does not help Gomez as he looks to regain his place. But it does show that his opportunity to take back his spot should come.
And there is no question that he has the ability to make the most of that chance.
