Report: Aston Villa want 'sensational' £85,000-a-week Liverpool player

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has emerged as a transfer target for Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa, according to The Express.

Gomez has struggled to get back into Jurgen Klopp’s team after suffering an ACL injury last season.

A lack of game time could see him edge close to the Anfield exit and Gerrard is finely poised to snap him up.

Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate have limited Gomez to just 311 minutes of action in all competitions this season.

That simply won’t do for the 24-year-old who will have a desire to go with England to next winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

Gomez has been at Liverpool in 2015 when he checked in from Charlton. He cost the club just £3.5 million and has won Premier League and Champions League titles.

In total, the versatile defender has played 128 times for Liverpool but he could now be on the way out.

Gerrard has made a flying start to life at Aston Villa. He has overseen two wins from as many games and things look to be on the up.

Clearly, he will want to make some changes to the squad in January though as he looks to progress further up the table.

A new centre-back seems likely to be on the agenda and Gomez could be an attractive signing.

Exciting: Liverpool talent Gomez fits the bill of a Villa signing

The Villans have enjoyed success in recent transfer windows when they’ve targeted young, British talent in the domestic market.

Gomez would be another step in the right direction and he’d represent an upgrade on Villa’s current defensive options.

Klopp previously called Gomez a ‘sensational footballer’ and he might not want to let him go without a fight.

Gomez earns £85,000-a-week at Liverpool and that might provide Villa with a mini stumbling block.

Regular football is a must for the defender though and linking up with Gerrard could be perfect at this stage of his career.

Villa have shown ambition by appointing Gerrard and landing Gomez would be a great start to the transfer window for the Villans.
