Report: Liverpool have asked about £60m-rated Gerrard-like talent

Liverpool have reportedly sounded out a new option for their midfield in the form of Inter Milan midfielder, Nicolo Barella, according to reports from Italy.

Gazzetta dello Sport make the claim. They suggest that while Barella is close to signing a new contract in the coming days, Liverpool have indeed tested the waters when it comes to the Italian.

Gazzetta suggest that the Reds, along with PSG, have asked about Barella, with the intention of steering him away from Inter. However, the Euro 2020 winning star is still expected to put pen to paper on a new deal in Milan.

Liverpool are seemingly scouring the market for a top midfielder. They lost Gini Wijnaldum in the summer, and have yet to sign a replacement. Their young star, Harvey Elliott, has also lost the majority of this season due to a wretched injury.

What Has Gone RIGHT At West Ham United?

Barella, who is regarded as one of the top midfield talents in Italy, was wanted by Tottenham in the summer. At that time, it was claimed Inter would only entertain offers of £60m+ for their man.

TBR’s View: Barella world-class but Liverpool always up against it

For a start, the £60m fee is always going to be a stretch for FSG. Secondly, Barella always seemed to have his heart set on a new contract in Milan.

That’s made this deal almost impossible. Of course, you have to admire the Reds at least looking at someone who is of the highest quality.

However, it was always going to be an uphill battle. Liverpool fans, though, can take heart from the fact their club is looking at such players. Indeed anyone who draws comparisons to Steven Gerrard at any point in their career is worth a look for the Anfield club.
