Report: Tottenham leading pursuit for Euro 2020 talent; would break club's transfer record
Tottenham are reportedly in the lead for the race to sign Inter Milan and Italy star Nicolo Barella.
Marca claim that the north London side, as well as Liverpool, are the two favourites to land the 24-year-old midfielder.
Barella has come to the forefront of buying teams in Europe following a breakout summer with the Azzurri.
However, Tottenham face a financial hurdle if they are to sign the playmaker this summer. As per Marca, Inter are keen to retain the midfielder this summer.
Furthermore, La Repubblica report that the Serie A champions will only entertain offers of €70m (£60m).
As figures from Transfermarkt show, any move for Barella will eclipse the club-record fee Tottenham paid for Tanguy Ndombele.
With Tottenham not competing in the UEFA Champions League this season, it is unlikely Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have the funds to match Inter’s asking price for Barella.
Indeed, Tottenham are yet to sign anyone this window as Nuno this weekend took over his first game as Spurs manager. A 1-1 draw against Leyton Orient kicked off the north London side’s pre-season, and fans will be expecting new arrivals in the coming weeks.
A defender is high on Nuno’s list this summer. And reports seemingly indicate that Spurs are close to reaching an agreement with Bologna for Japanese international Takehiro Tomiyasu. Tottenham are also keen on Jules Kounde.
However, Barella could be a stretch too far for Tottenham given the midfielder’s price tag and Spurs’ lack of Champions League football for next season.
