Liverpool held a meeting before the transfer window shut over the possibility of signing Gavi from Barcelona.

The report from 90min suggests that Liverpool were among a number of times keeping tabs on the 18-year-old’s contract situation.

Gavi’s current contract runs out next summer, and due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties they’ve not been able to extend it.

Liverpool were among a number of Europe’s top clubs who monitored Gavi’s availability.

The Spanish prodigy is one of the most exciting talents in the world.

He broke the record for the youngest player ever to make his senior debut for the Spanish national team last summer.

He’s also started every match for Barcelona in La Liga this season, and is going from strength to strength.

Liverpool held Gavi transfer meeting

Jurgen Klopp spent much of the transfer window denying Liverpool needed another central midfielder.

However, injuries to Thiago and Naby Keita forced the Reds to make a last-minute midfielder addition.

Brazilian Arthur Melo was brought in on loan from Juventus, but was unavailable for the Merseyside Derby due to not having international clearance.

It would be interesting to know if Liverpool had another transfer meeting over Gavi when discussing potential recruits.

It’s well established that Liverpool plan to strengthen their midfield next season.

There have been reports that Jude Bellingham is Klopp’s main long-term target.

Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho have come into Klopp’s side this season and both looked impressive.

The former Fulham duo are certainly a big part of Liverpool’s future, and given Gavi’s age, he would be too if brought in.

There are no guarantees over Barcelona’s finances right now.

And Liverpool could swoop in for Gavi if the Catalan club can’t find a sufficient solution for the ‘spectacular’ midfielder.
