Report: Leeds willing to trigger release clause of Lewis O'Brien

Leeds United are planning a fresh move for Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien, and are prepared to meet his buyout clause, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (30/1; page 62).

There is a growing sense of frustration amongst some of the Elland Road faithful as the January deadline looms. Leeds are yet to strengthen while several of the sides around them have been busy.

In fact, there is now a worry that most of the Whites’ deadline day will be spent responding to offers rather than making them. Reports this weekend suggested that West Ham plan to make a £50 million bid for Kalvin Phillips.

The Leeds hierarchy will be aware that selling Phillips would be a terrible move. But there is some hope that Leeds could yet make a signing.

The Sun on Sunday (30/1; page 62) reports that Marcelo Bielsa’s men are set to reignite their interest in O’Brien having been heavily linked with the midfielder in the summer.

And it appears that Leeds are ready to get a deal for O’Brien across the line. The report suggests that they are willing to trigger the 23-year-old’s £10 million release clause.

O’Brien deal would see Leeds end underwhelming window on a high

Of course, Leeds are not going to overhaul their squad in the final hours of the window. And with that, any signings made are unlikely to transform their season and immediately take the Whites from the periphery of the relegation battle on their own.

But signing O’Brien would hand Bielsa’s side a timely boost. He has been outstanding in the Championship this term. And he has helped Carlos Corberan’s side in the play-off picture.

Corberan has previously labelled him a ‘very special‘ player.

Bielsa is clearly an admirer of the youngster. And plenty of Leeds fans have been crying out for a central midfielder for some time.

Leeds keeping their best players is a must. They cannot sell Phillips or Raphinha before the deadline. And adding one more signing would allow the fans to reflect on the month more positively than they may do right now.
