Report: Leeds want 22-year-old top-flight stalwart amid Phillips concerns
Leeds United are interested in signing Boubacar Kamara during the January transfer window, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
The Whites may have welcomed their two postponements after Christmas while they endure one of the most remarkable injury crises in the Premier League.
However, while they may go into Sunday’s clash with Burnley with some of their players back available, they remain without two of their most important squad members.
Marcelo Bielsa confirmed in his press conference this week that Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips may not be back until March.
Not having Cooper is a blow. He has been outstanding for much of this season. But they do have options at centre-back. What they still do not have however, is a replacement for Phillips.
The likes of Adam Forshaw, Mateusz Klich and Stuart Dallas have experience in his role. But it would be a huge boost if they could add a tenacious midfielder in the window.
And one player they apparently have their eye on is Kamara. The Daily Mail suggests that he is one name on their radar this month.
Kamara – who was coming through the ranks while Bielsa was in charge at Stade Vélodrome – is attracting a lot of attention with his Marseille contract up this summer. In fact, it was reported last month that Newcastle were planning to hold talks over a pre-contract deal.
And if they are able to reach an agreement, they hope to pay the Ligue 1 side £10 million to bring him in in January.
Leeds may be hoping that they could do something similar.
Huge coup if Leeds can bring Boubacar Kamara to Elland Road
Obviously, paying £10 million for a player out of contract this summer is not ideal. However, Leeds’ priority will be ensuring that they remain in the top-flight. And that fee will quickly look like a bargain should Kamara prove to be capable of filling Phillips’s shoes.
The Frenchman can also play at centre-back. And he has filled in in a number of other roles. So you can understand why Bielsa may be a fan.
