Report: Leeds United could still sign ‘talented’ 25-year-old in January, he's waiting for Elland Road move

The Athletic reports that Leeds United could still try to sign Philadelphia Union full-back Kai Wagner in January, after he was waiting for a move to Elland Road over the summer.

Jesse Marsch managed to come through a difficult run of form in the first-half of the campaign after Leeds failed to pick up a win in eight Premier League games.

The Whites secured a dramatic 4-3 win over Bournemouth before producing a shock 2-1 win at Anfield at the end of October.

Marsch was seemingly under pressure before the back-to-back wins but he’s certainly given himself some breathing space heading into the second-half of the campaign.

Despite improved results, the American boss will be keen to strengthen his squad next month and he could return with a move for a player he targeted over the summer in Wagner.

The Daily Mail reported back in August that the 25-year-old was actually waiting for a call from Leeds ahead of a deadline day move.

Of course, the move didn’t materialise over the summer but Leeds are seemingly setting their sights on the left-back once again.

Leeds could still sign Wagner

The Athletic claims Leeds are eager to make changes to their squad in January by targeting a left-back and a striker.

Wagner is mentioned in the reports as a possible candidate to fill the left-back role at Elland Road.

The outlet notes it seems necessary for Leeds to strengthen their ranks in January due to their precarious position in the league.

Marsch’s men sit two points above the relegation zone but the Leeds boss remains confident that he has the necessary players to produce more consistent results.

Leeds will certainly need to provide Marsch with another option at left-back after their only senior player in the role in Junior Firpo has struggled with a knee injury during the first-half of the campaign.

Partik Struijk has performed well in the position but Marsch will be eager to get another natural left-back through the door in January.

Wagner has performed well in the MLS this season and has provided eight assists in 33 appearances.

The German has been described as a ‘talented’ full-back and could offer Marsch more of an attacking threat down the left-hand side.

He is still unproven in terms of playing in a top European league though and would need time to adapt to the Premier League. But Wagner has played alongside Brenden Aaronson in Philadelphia so the Leeds midfielder could certainly help him adjust to the step-up in quality.
