Report: Leeds said to know everything about 'brilliant' £20m attacker
Leeds United are understood to have compiled a lengthy dossier on Nottingham Forest starlet Brennan Johnson, according to a report from The Athletic.
For some time, it has appeared that Leeds’ one target for the January transfer window was Brenden Aaronson. They have reportedly made two bids for the USMNT international.
The Athletic previously suggested that it may be Aaronson or nothing in this window for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. But perhaps there could yet be a late twist in the tale.
Johnson has caught the eye after a brilliant run of form with Forest. Steve Cooper’s men have been one of the best sides in the league since his appointment.
The Wales international – who Cooper lauded for his ‘brilliant’ display in Forest’s latest win – has seven goals and five assists.
Ideally of course, Forest would keep the 20-year-old for the rest of the season at least. But with his contract now into its final 18 months, it would appear that they face a tough decision in the days ahead.
It has been suggested that Newcastle are expected to bid, while Brentford have made a club-record offer. Forest value the youngster at £20 million.
And perhaps the increasing interest will tempt Leeds to act. The Athletic claims that the Whites have compiled a lengthy dossier on Johnson. And they have been told that Leeds know everything about the starlet.
Leeds fans may not need to wait too long to find out how highly Brennan Johnson is rated at Elland Road
It is not clear whether Leeds plan to bid in this window. And Victor Orta is renowned for doing incredibly thorough research on a host of potential targets.
But with the situation potentially coming to a head, Leeds will know that it may soon be now or never.
Johnson has tended to play in wider areas this season. However, he is also capable of playing in a number of central roles, including up front.
The idea of a winger playing as a striker may send a shiver down the Leeds fans’ spines right now. But his versatility helps highlight why he is a player Bielsa would surely love to have in the ranks.
It appears that plenty needs to happen before an Elland Road move looks likely. But Leeds will surely have their eye on what the likes of Brentford and Newcastle do in the days ahead.
