Report: Leeds growing optimistic Kalvin Phillips will stay this summer
Leeds United are growing quietly optimistic that Kalvin Phillips will stay at Elland Road for one more year and sign a new contract, according to a report from The Sun.
Phillips has been heavily linked with a move away this summer. Of course, Jesse Marsch’s men boosted their hopes of keeping the 26-year-old considerably by keeping themselves in the Premier League.
But Leeds fans are also realistic about their chances of keeping Phillips. While there looks to be no chance of a move to Manchester United, it was alarming that City had reportedly identified the England international as a top target.
Phillips is an ‘amazing‘ player. And there is a desire amongst supporters to see him realise his full potential. And obviously, City would provide the ideal platform in many ways.
So there will be concern about the idea of the Cityzens making a bid. But those working behind the scenes at Leeds appear to be growing hopeful that he may not be going anywhere this summer.
The Sun reports that Leeds want to hand Phillips a new contract. And they are becoming more and more optimistic that he will choose to stay for another season.
Leeds optimistic Phillips will stay
It would be massive for Leeds to keep Phillips. There is speculation that Raphinha could leave. And it would be extremely tough for the Whites to try and replace both men in the same window.
Much will surely depend on whether City make a substantial bid for Phillips this summer. Even if he is interested in signing a new contract, turning Pep Guardiola’s men would be tough if they do make an offer.
Leeds need to try and get the situation resolved as soon as possible. But they also need to show the kind of ambition in the market that will convince Phillips that Leeds can help him to the next level.
