Report: Kalvin Phillips will not join Manchester United from Leeds

Kalvin Phillips will not join Manchester United, with the Daily Star reporting that the Leeds United star has told those close to him that he has no intention of moving to Old Trafford this summer.

Leeds fans are braced for Phillips to potentially leave Elland Road. Certainly, it will be something of a formality if the Whites fail to keep themselves in the Premier League.

Phillips was clearly emotional as he took a lap of the stadium following their final home game of the season on Sunday. And the fear for supporters is that he was saying goodbye.

The queue of admirers is seemingly growing. The Daily Star reports that Manchester City plan to join the race for the England international. Pep Guardiola views Phillips as an ideal replacement for Fernandinho.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Liverpool also want the 26-year-old, who could cost £60 million. Interestingly, Paul Merson recently suggested that the former probably need Phillips more than any other player.

But clearly, that move would be impossible for Leeds fans to stomach.

Phillips is the most popular member of the current squad, and he is a boyhood fan. So watching him move to Old Trafford would damage his relationship with supporters beyond repair.

The positive news for Leeds fans is that Manchester City and Liverpool are more likely to sign him. That is because the Daily Star reports that he has told those close to him that he has no intention of being a part of Erik ten Hag’s squad.

Phillips could leave with the Leeds fans’ blessing this summer. If they are relegated, the large majority accept that there is no way that they can expect him to stay.

But any goodwill would disappear if he looked destined for Manchester United.

So, while Leeds fans will still hope that Phillips will stay this summer, they will take some comfort from the fact that he looks unlikely to make the move that would be a real sickener for supporters.
