Report: Jose Mourinho will have to spend just £17m to get Aston Villa midfielder
Italian website Sport Mediaset have claimed that Jose Mourinho remains interested in luring Douglas Luiz to Roma from Aston Villa. The report identifies the bargain figure required to sign the Brazil international – just £17million. However, Roma are even struggling to pay that fee.
Luiz, 23, has been excellent for Villa in the two seasons since they gained promotion back to the Premier League. Signed from Manchester City as an unknown for around £15million – he has gone on to play 76 times in two season for Dean Smith’s side. His form has attracted plenty of attention.
Not only has he earned international recognition with six caps for Brazil – but Roma are also keen. BBC Sport claim Mourinho is considering Luiz as well as Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka. The new report states Villa only want £17million – but Roma are only going as high as £14.5million.
Surely Luiz worth a lot more to Villa – amid Mourinho interest?
He cost Villa £15million, and he has since established himself a proper midfielder in the Premier League and a Brazil international. So, is that rise worth just £2million more? Surely Villa need to request at least a figure in the region of £25million for Luiz – rather than just £17million.
Perhaps there is something behind the scenes. Luiz wants to go, or that he is about to be replaced. But the midfielder has shown the kind of quality expected from a player worth more than just £17million.
