Report: 'Fantastic' Tottenham player could join top-eight PL side on loan
Tottenham Hotspur may be able to offload Matt Doherty to a Premier League rival during the January transfer window, with The Sun reporting that a loan move to Wolves could be on the cards.
Doherty has endured a torrid time at Tottenham. He struggled to oust the much-maligned Serge Aurier from the right-back spot last season. And he has not started a single league game this term.
Antonio Conte has deployed the Republic of Ireland international in the left wing-back role in a couple of recent games. But perhaps his 45-minute outing at Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday could prove to be his final appearance for Tottenham.
That is because The Sun is reporting that a return to Molineux could take place this month. Doherty could potentially return to Wolves on loan.
Bruno Lage’s men actually boast one of the best defensive records in the Premier League this season. Only Manchester City have conceded fewer times than Wolves, who have let in 14 goals.
Nelson Semedo has spent the large majority of the season at right wing-back. But perhaps Lage is looking at Doherty to provide cover.
Tottenham will welcome Wolves making loan move for Matt Doherty
Tottenham will probably have few qualms about loaning him out. Unfortunately, that probably represents the best way for the 29-year-old to add some value ahead of the summer.
A return to familiar surroundings may well help Doherty. Former Wolves and Tottenham boss Nuno Espírito Santo insisted that he had been fantastic in the Premier League back in 2019.
Wolves fans may not be enthused should he return. It did appear that they were content with the £15 million they received when he left.
But if he is able to rediscover his best form – and he would arrive with a point to prove – then he could prove to be a very shrewd loan signing.
