According to a report from The Athletic, Tanguy Ndombele’s Tottenham Hotspur career is as good as over.

Mauricio Pochettino splashed a club-record £53.8 million to sign the talented Frenchman from Lyon in 2019 (BBC). He was viewed as an incredible signing at the time, but things clearly haven’t worked out.

Ndombele, branded as ‘fantastic’ by Gary Neville, played 91 times for Tottenham, scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in all competitions. He showed his brilliance in flashes, but finding consistency proved to be his biggest problem in North London.

Antonio Conte didn’t fancy him at all and Spurs loaned him out in January.

The report claims that Ndombele is guaranteed to return to Tottenham in the summer because Lyon just don’t have the money to make his move permanent.

Spurs will then have the opportunity to reintegrate him into the side, but that’s one thing Conte is not prepared to do.

The report claims that Ndombele is unlikely to play a minute of football for Tottenham again – at least until Conte is the manager of the club.

That means Spurs will try to push him out again this summer and it is very likely that a permanent deal will go through.

One of the biggest problems Ndombele faced at Tottenham was a lack of trust from the manager.

Pochettino, the man who signed him, faced the sack just a few months after Ndombele arrived. Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte just didn’t fancy him and that seriously dented his confidence.

The best thing for Ndombele this summer would be to find a club that will suit him. He’s a fantastic talent, we all know that, but he needs the right system to thrive, and Spurs just don’t have that at the moment.

It will be interesting to see where the Frenchman will end up if he does leave Spurs permanently this summer.
