'I think it's possible': Journalist shares who he thinks Spurs are more likely to re-sign - Bale or Eriksen

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare and James Maw sat down to talk all things Tottenham Hotspur this week, including who Spurs are more likely to re-sign – Gareth Bale or Christian Eriksen.

If a Spurs fan was stopped on the street and asked to name two players from the last decade they’d like to bring back to the club, the answer will likely be Bale and Eriksen.

The Welshman was arguably the best player in the Premier League in his final season at Tottenham. He was absolutely incredible and it’s no surprise that Real Madrid willingly forked out a then-world record fee of £85.3 million. (BBC)

Eriksen probably wasn’t the best in the country like Bale was, but he was almost always a reliable player for Spurs. He made them look absolutely brilliant at times and it was a shame to see him leave the club for Inter Milan in 2020.

Who’s more likely to re-sign for Tottenham – Bale or Eriksen?

On the latest episode of The View From The Lane podcast, Eccleshare said: “I would say Eriksen, definitely.

“Conte even spoke about him in a press conference around the time he came back to England. He talked about him in glowing terms and they worked together and Inter and he didn’t rule out going for him in the summer. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but I can see that one.

“I’m not convinced it would be the most progressive step for Spurs to take. It feels a little bit like trying to reclaim faded glories, but I think it’s possible.

“But Bale, I’d be really surprised if that one was to happen.”

TBR View:

Ideally, Tottenham shouldn’t really consider signing either Bale or Eriksen, even though they’re both world-beaters on their day.

They’re both on the wrong side of 30 now and it is extremely unlikely that either of them will be able to get back to being the amazing players they were a few years ago.

If Conte had to bring one of Bale and Eriksen back in, the latter makes more sense. Spurs are crying out for a creative, goalscoring midfielder and the Dane is exactly that.

If he can be even half as good as he was in his prime at Tottenham, he could make a real difference, but it still is unlikely that Spurs would consider bringing him back to the club.
