According to The Daily Star, Liverpool have emerged as surprise contenders to sign Christian Pulisic from Chelsea as Jurgen Klopp wants to replace Sadio Mane, who looks set to leave Anfield this summer.

The Senegal international has been one of the Reds’ best players since he joined them from Southampton all the way back in 2016. He has been incredible for Liverpool over the last six years, scoring 120 goals and setting up 48 more in 269 appearances in all competitions.

Mane has helped Liverpool win all the trophies that have been up for grabs since 2019 as well. He is a great player and Reds fans will remember him for a long, long time, even if he leaves this summer.

The problem for Klopp now is that he needs a replacement for Mane if he goes. If reports are to be believed, Pulisic is a target, despite the fact that he once turned down a move to Liverpool.

Christian Pulisic rejected Liverpool before joining Chelsea

Both Pulisic and Klopp made fantastic names for themselves at Borussia Dortmund, but the American never played under the now-Liverpool boss, who left Signal Iduna Park in May 2015.

Just a few years later, in 2019, Liverpool reportedly wanted Pulisic and the winger was even offered a chance to move to Anfield. However, the report claims that he rejected the opportunity to join Klopp due to a lack of first-team assurances.

Chelsea then went in for Pulisic and sealed the deal for a whopping £58 million. (BBC)

Now, just three years later, the American could get another opportunity to move to Anfield, and this time, he may well say yes.

TBR View:

Pulisic is an extraordinary talent. On his day, he can win games on his own, but things just haven’t worked out for him at Chelsea since his big move three years ago.

The USMNT international has played 115 times for the Blues but has only scored 25 goals. He only started 21 games in all competitions last campaign, which is simply not enough for a player of his quality.

Pulisic, branded as a ‘fantastic’ player by Klopp in 2018, could well leave Stamford Bridge in search of better opportunities this summer, and if Liverpool show interest, it will be interesting to see what he’ll do.

Klopp’s high-octane football will definitely suit him a lot more, but whether he will play week in, week out at Anfield is a big question mark, especially as Luis Diaz will likely be the undisputed starter on the left flank next season.
