Report: Everton tried to hijack Matheus Cunha move
Everton were interested in Matheus Cunha, who is moving to Atletico Madrid, according to Fabrizio Romano.
What’s the story?
According to the transfer guru, the Brazilian’s move to the Wanda Metropolitano is a done deal.
Sky Germany are reporting the Blues tried to hijack the move at the last minute.
The centre-forward will cost Diego Simeone’s side €30m (£25.6m) and he will undergo a medical ahead of completing his move.
Despite bringing in Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray, the Toffees seem keen on adding another attacker.
The club were in for Joaquin Correa, however, the 27-year-old only wants to move to Inter Milan.
Meanwhile, Richarlison has allegedly been contacted by Paris Saint Germain over a move to France.
Everton may expect a departure if they are targeting players like Cunha
The current Everton side are fairly well balanced, especially in attack.
There are a number of options available to Rafael Benitez after the acquisitions of Gray and Townsend.
As a result, you would imagine enquiries over another attacker, like Cunha, is only because Everton expect a departure.
There is concern over PSG’s chase of Richarlison due to the size of the club.
Meanwhile, Gylfi Sigurdsson and James Rodriguez are yet to play this campaign, although the latter has been out due to COVID-19. However, the Colombian has been linked with an exit this summer to Porto.
But, rejection from Cunha, who is moving to Atletico, does mean another forward is unlikely this late in the window.
