Report: Everton could revisit Sean Longstaff deal with James Rodriguez gone
Everton are considering making a move for Newcastle midfielder, Sean Longstaff, during the January window, with James Rodriguez now off the books.
Although not a direct like for like replacement, Rodriguez’s hefty wage being off the books has given the Toffees some flexibility. And after keeping tabs on Longstaff all summer, the Liverpool Echo claim Everton could turn to the 23-year-old in January.
Longstaff is thought to be among a number of midfielders who Benitez is targeting. The Newcastle star is out of contract in the summer, and Everton feel they could get him in January.
Alongside brother Matty, Longstaff has made an impression on Tyneside since breaking through. However, Sean has progressed more than his younger sibling, and made 22 appearances last term. He’s since appeared five times this term as well.
Everton are looking to build on a positive start under Rafa Benitez. After coming under pressure in the summer, the Spaniard has made the best impression possible at Goodison.
TBR’s View: Longstaff a solid if unspectacular addition for Everton
And sometimes, that’s all squads need. Everton have a few flair players in Richarlison and Andre Gomes. But Benitez does like a workhorse, and Longstaff is in that mold.
If Longstaff is available on the cheap then it really could be a no-brainer from the Toffees. At 23, he’s got ample time to develop further, while already having that PL experience behind him.
Everton are certainly improving under Benitez. And adding more quality and experience like Longstaff can only benefit the club.
