Report: Everton boss Frank Lampard has held talks with Neal Maupay

Frank Lampard has held talks with Neal Maupay as Everton look to snatch the striker from Nottingham Forest’s grasp, according to a report from The Athletic.

Some may have expected Maupay to have joined Forest by now. The Athletic notes that Steve Cooper’s men agreed a £15 million fee with Brighton for the Frenchman at the weekend.

However, reports on Tuesday suggested that both Everton and Fulham were looking to make a last-ditch play for the 26-year-old.

It is noted that all three sides’ interest is at different stages. And while it is not entirely clear how close the Toffees are to a deal, The Athletic reports that Lampard has now held talks with Maupay.

Everton cannot let this summer window close without signing another striker. Obviously, they lost Richarlison earlier in the window.

And they were dealt a huge blow on the eve of the new campaign with Dominic Calvert-Lewin sustaining another injury.

Without him, Everton have scored one goal in their opening two games. And that came thanks to an own goal from Lucas Digne. They certainly appear to desperately need another goalscorer.

Maupay has, at times, come in for criticism for not being anywhere near as prolific as he should be. His best tally in a single Premier League season is 10.

But he would be a shrewd signing. He is not commanding a huge fee. And he is a player opposition defenders appear to dislike playing against. Graham Potter once labelled him ‘incredible‘.

Everton will back themselves in the race. Conor Coady made no secret of how impressed he was by Lampard in discussions before his move to Goodison Park.

The Toffees boss will hope that he can be just as persuasive with Maupay.
