Report: Euro giants face bump in bid to sign another Man City star, Guardiola claimed he’s ‘the best’

Barcelona face a bump in their bid to raid Man City for another star in defender Aymeric Laporte, per ESPN.

Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia have already moved to the Camp Nou this summer. But Ronald Koeman is keen to add further experience to his centre-back options with eyes on Laporte.

The Spain international is also open to leaving the Etihad Stadium for Catalunya, having fallen down Pep Guardiola’s pecking order. He struggled for minutes last season as John Stones and Ruben Dias formed a strong pairing.

Laporte started just 14 of 16 Premier League appearances as Man City stormed to another title. His longest run of consecutive outings in Guardiola’s backline also lasted just three games – achieved four times.

What On Earth Is Going On With The Copa America?

Barcelona could now reunite Laporte with his former Man City teammates at the Camp Nou. However, the La Liga outfit would first have to sell two of their current centre-halves with Koeman already boasting six options.

Samuel Umtiti is one the Camp Nou outfit hope to offload regardless of their pursuit of Laporte. But they could also be forced to sell Clement Lenglet as President Joan Laporta would otherwise not be able to afford a deal.

Reports in Spain have also suggested Laporte wants to leave Man City, but is prioritising either Madrid club over Barcelona. He is also confused as to why Guardiola has not given him a clear picture of his future in the Premier League.

Barcelona bump great for Man City if keeping Laporte

Barcelona facing bumps in the road as Koeman strives to sign Laporte will be great for Man City if Guardiola wants to keep him at the club. As it offers the Citizens boss the chance to paint a clearer picture of the Spaniard’s future role.

Laporte will likely not settle for a backup position to Stones and Dias next term and may instead want out. Guardiola could yet convince the former France youth international to stay, but only if there is a role for him to play.

Guardiola was full of praise for Laporte earlier last season as he waited for the centre-half’s return from injury. He stated, via the Manchester Evening News, that the 27-year-old was ‘the best left central defender in the world’.

Guardiola would surely be loath to see a player of that quality leave Man City this summer. And if so, needs to convince Laporte to reject interest from Barcelona and fight for his future at the club.
