The Athletic reports that Eden Hazard is now set to meet with Real Madrid to discuss his future, after claims Newcastle United want to sign him.

Newcastle are currently flying high in the Premier League and are exceeding expectations under Eddie Howe.

Much of their success under the Englishman has been down to their astute business in the transfer market, with signings like Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Sven Botman making a huge impact this season.

The Magpies haven’t made any big moves for stars like Hazard as of yet, despite the takeover last year. But El Nacional has claimed that St James’ Park could be a possible destination for the former Chelsea ace.

Now, it seems the 32-year-old is set for talks with Madrid president Florentino Perez over his future in the Spanish capital.

Hazard set for meeting with Real Madrid

Hazard has endured a tough spell at Madrid ever since he completed a switch from Chelsea back in 2019.

The Belgian attacker’s progress has been hampered with injuries and he’s failed to nail down a starting place at the Bernabeu.

The Athletic reports that Hazard does not want to leave Spain during the middle of the season, with his contract set to run until the end of next season.

But he could be open to leaving in the summer, if that is what Madrid desires. The Spanish giants have put the winger up for sale for the past four transfer windows and Perez feels a sale or loan is impossible right now.

The outlet notes that Hazard is yet to hold serious talks with any club, including Newcastle and Chelsea. But he will sit down with Madrid next month to assess his options for the future.

Hazard has gone from being arguably one of the best players in the world at Chelsea to a squad player at Madrid.

His notable decline has been partly down to persistent injuries but he was once ‘unplayable’ in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, signing Hazard wouldn’t make sense for Newcastle considering what they’re trying to build under Howe.

The club are clearly targeting younger players and aiming to shape a side that is capable of challenging for major honours in the future.

Hazard was once an outstanding player, but his capability to play at the very top level seems to have passed.
