'Unplayable': Gary Cahill raves about winger Newcastle United reportedly want to sign straight after retiring

Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has raved about reported Newcastle United target Eden Hazard on Sky Sports – straight after announcing his retirement.

Spanish outlet El Nacional reported earlier this month that Newcastle are the ‘most interested’ in signing Hazard from Real Madrid.

The Belgian made the switch to Madrid back in 2019 after a dazzling seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

The 31-year-old picked up two Premier League titles during his time in west London and played alongside Cahill.

Cahill announced his retirement from football today and appeared on Sky Sports to talk about his impressive career. And the Englishman named Hazard as the best player he’s ever played alongside.

Cahill raves about Hazard

“The best player I’ve played with is tough because I’ve played with so many great players,” Cahill said.

“I think through just natural ability, one of has to be Eden Hazard I think the days when I was with him at Chelsea, sometimes he was unplayable.”

Hazard has endured a difficult three-years in Madrid and his time there hasn’t exactly gone according to plan.

The winger has struggled with persistent injuries and has been unable to produce the dazzling form that earned him the move to La Liga.

Newcastle are flying high at the moment and currently sit third in the Premier League.

Despite the change of ownership, the Magpies haven’t paid over the odds for players and have been measured in their approach in the transfer market.

Hazard would certainly fit the bill as a high-profile signing and would bring some know-how to the Newcastle squad.

But the move doesn’t seem to fit with their transfer strategy at this moment in time and Hazard’s injury record would be a cause for concern.

Nevertheless, he would undoubtedly be a decent addition to the squad and if he could rediscover anything close to his old form, a move could be a stroke of genius from Newcastle.
