Report: Club tell their 'extraordinary' player he can leave after claims Leeds are about to bid for him

90 Min reports that Atletico Madrid have told Matheus Cunha he can leave, after claims Leeds United are about to bid for him.

Leeds will seemingly be in the market for attacking reinforcements in January after missing out on several targets over the summer.

Jesse Marsch’s side were linked with a move for World Cup star Cody Gakpo and Andrea Radrizzani confirmed that they would try to strike a deal with PSV on deadline day

Belgium striker Charles De Ketelaere also completed a switch to AC Milan after he looked set to move to Elland Road.

And it seems that Leeds are now eyeing a move for Cunha. Mundo Deportivo claimed last month that the Whites are one of the sides interested in the Brazilian, with Atletico willing to sell him for £26m-30m in January.

In the latest update on Cunha’s future, he has apparently been told he is free to leave Atletico in the upcoming transfer window.

Cunha told he can leave

90 Min reports that both Cunha and Felipe have been told they can leave Diego Simeone’s side after a turbulent start to the season.

But Leeds will face competition for Cunha’s signature, with new Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui eyeing a move for both players. Wolves have already held talks with the pair over a possible move to Molineux.

Cunha joined Atletico from Bundesliga outfit Hertha BSC just last year but after a disappointing start to the season, he could be on his way out already.

The 23-year-old has failed to get on the scoresheet so far this season after 11 appearances in La Liga.

The ‘extraordinary’ forward has managed to register two assists but has been unable to replicate his promising debut season under Simeone.

Leeds have found a prolific goal scorer of their own this season as Rodrigo has managed to bag nine goals in just 13 Premier League appearances. The Spaniard’s early season form has come as a slight surprise while Patrick Bamford is yet to open his account in the league during the current campaign.

Cunha would certainly add depth to the Leeds frontline and at 23, he still has plenty of time to improve his game. The Brazilian may not be a prolific goal scorer but he is capable of playing across the front-three.
