Report: Club are now desperate to get rid of 'world-class' Tottenham target, they could let him go for free

Memphis Depay could leave Barcelona during the January transfer window on a free transfer amid links with Tottenham.

It has been reported that Spurs have been offered the chance to sign the Netherlands World Cup star when the winter market opens.

Barcelona’s financial issues are well known and Depay is one of the players they are looking to offload next month to balance the books.

ESPN report that desperation extends to potentially letting him leave for no transfer fee just to get him off the wage bill.

Newcastle have also been linked with Depay, but have so far avoided taking outcasts from big clubs on huge wages, preferring younger, hungrier players instead.

That is the model that Daniel Levy typically prefers too but Antonio Conte wants experienced, proven players to win now.

Levy got in Ivan Perisic on a free transfer during the summer and perhaps the lack of a transfer fee would see him strike a similar deal for Depay.

It has been reported that Richarlison’s injury may see Spurs accelerate plans for a new attacker before the end of the January window.

Depay has been described as ‘world-class’ and was important for Holland at the World Cup as they reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual winners Argentina.

But his time in England with Manchester United did not go well and that is something any Premier League suitor would need to be wary of.
