Report: Newcastle on pole position to sign Memphis Depay in January

Memphis Depay could be convinced to join Newcastle United during the January transfer window, with Sport reporting that the Magpies are on pole position to sign the Dutchman.

Depay currently has his sights set on staying at Barcelona until the end of his contract. He will become a free agent in the summer having only signed a two-year deal with the Catalan giants.

Sport reports that Barca would like to sell the Dutchman in January to reduce their wage bill. And it seems that Newcastle have made their move to try and bring the 28-year-old to St James’ Park.

Reports from Mundo Deportivo on Wednesday claimed that Newcastle had actually made a £17.5 million bid for Depay.

Sport is suggesting that it is indeed Eddie Howe’s leading the race to sign Depay. And interestingly, they add that Depay could be persuaded to make the move to Tyneside – despite his reluctance to leave Barcelona before the end of his contract.

Of course, Newcastle can offer him a place in a side which is developing at a rapid rate. The Magpies look to be well ahead of schedule this season, with Howe’s men sat third in the Premier League right now.

They have been extremely entertaining. And no side in the division has conceded fewer goals than Newcastle.

They have a brilliant opportunity to achieve something special. And signing players such as Depay during the January window may accelerate their push up the table.

Despite Barca wanting to offload Depay, he has proved to be a decent signing. He has scored 14 goals in 42 games in all competitions.

He was previously prolific for Lyon. And Louis van Gaal suggested that he is an ‘extraordinary‘ player ahead of the World Cup.

Newcastle will hope that they can convince Depay into the move in the next few days.
