Report: CL club now expecting Tottenham to move for £52m midfielder, he knows Bentancur well
The transfer window opens in less than a week, and Antonio Conte will want to bring in reinforcements.
However, Spurs certainly won’t turn down opportunities in other positions if they present themselves.
One player who has been linked with Spurs recently is Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
Spurs would have been hoping to watch him in Qatar, but he was an unused substitute throughout the tournament.
Sporting now believe that Tottenham will move for Ugarte in the near future.
This is because the club and player can’t agree on a new contract for the exciting holding midfielder.
His release clause currently stands at £52m, which Sporting doesn’t believe will put off Tottenham.
They want to increase his wages, and force any team to pay £70m to activate his release clause.
Tottenham will move for Ugarte
Spurs fans probably won’t see a holding midfielder as a priority in the transfer market, especially one that will cost more than £50m.
Tottenham’s other central midfielders haven’t really troubled either player’s place in the starting line-up.
Ugarte has been so good at Sporting that they allowed Joao Palhinha to join Fulham in the summer.
The Portuguese has been brilliant for the newly-promoted side, and Sporting rate Ugarte even more highly.
Sporting will be worried that Tottenham will move for Ugarte if a new deal can’t be agreed soon.
Spurs might be relying on Bentancur to potential help recruit the 21-year-old.
They’ve been international teammates for some time, and they could end up combining again at club level soon too.
