Report: Chelsea to rival Manchester United and PSG for Saul Niguez

Chelsea will rival Manchester United to sign Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez during the summer transfer window, according to Marca.

The midfielder has been with Atletico since 2014. He has made 337 appearances for the club, scoring 43 goals and claiming 19 assists.

During 2020/21 he helped Los Rojiblancos win the La Liga title, pipping Real Madrid and Barcelona in the process.

Now, he’s set to become a wanted man, with Premier League clubs keen to sign him.

Celtic strike Premier Sports deal - is this the "additional value" we've been waiting for?

It is also thought, according to Marca, that Saul is keen on embarking on a new challenge in the near future.

PSG are also in the race to sign the player who has collected 19 Spain caps during his career.

At 26, Saul has plenty of time to continue at the top level and the Blues are keen to sign a midfielder.

The Champions of Europe will aim to make a better fist of a title challenge during 2021/22.

In order to do that, boss Thomas Tuchel knows he must attract better players during the summer transfer window.

Signing Saul might not be straightforward. He has a release clause of £128 million, although Atletico might do business at around the £40 million mark.

The Spain star has five years left on his current deal and Los Rojiblancos won’t be in any real rush to sell him.

Saul to Chelsea: Midfielder could be perfect recruit

The beauty of signing the Atletico man would be his incredible versatility to play in different roles.

He can play as an anchor in midfield, as a conventional central midfielder or out wide as a defensive wide midfielder.

Saul loves to get stuck into tackles and he also moves the ball around the pitch well.

Chelsea’s midfield is in need of some reinforcing and taking Saul from Atletico makes perfect sense.

Jorginho hasn’t overly convinced, whilst N’Golo Kante perhaps offers something different.

Matteo Kovacic has struggled with injury problems, whilst Tiemoue Bakayoko and Ross Barkley will likely leave.

If the Blues can tempt the champions into a sale at an affordable price, the £258,000-a-week midfielder could light up the Premier League.
