Celtic target Declan Gallagher could be offered the chance to become one of Dundee United’s highest paid players, according to a report from the Evening Times.
The Hoops were linked with the 29-year-old earlier in the month. According to the Daily Record, they are monitoring the centre-back. And it was claimed that a Parkhead switch would be a dream move for Gallagher.
Gallagher is out of contract at Motherwell this summer. However, the Evening Times notes that he is a handful of appearances away from triggering an automatic extension.
The Evening Times suggests however, that Dundee United are looking to rival Celtic for Gallagher. In fact, it is suggested that they are prepared to put him on one of their most lucrative deals.
The Daily Record’s report noted that Aberdeen, Hibs and Blackburn are also keen. And the Evening Times has added QPR and Cardiff to his list of admirers.
TBR View: Celtic must improve defence, but losing out on Gallagher should not be a huge blow
Some Celtic fans were open to a move for Gallagher when the links emerged. However, it appeared that most felt that he would be a good signing as cover for their first choice defenders.
There is no question that the Hoops must improve defensively. Shane Duffy has been poor since arriving on loan. And Christopher Jullien is set to be sidelined for a number of months.
Signing Gallagher on a free transfer could be a shrewd move. But Celtic should not be too concerned should he stay put or stay elsewhere.
Big changes are needed at Parkhead on and off the pitch. And they arguably need to set their sights in the transfer market much higher.
