Report: Celtic on verge of £500,000 signing, player waved goodbye to fans after Thursday outing

Celtic are on ‘the verge’ of signing Shamrock Rovers ace Liam Scales. The 42 say he waved goodbye to fans, after losing to Flora Tallinn on Thursday.

Shamrock suffered a European exit after losing on aggregate to Estonian side Tallinn. In what could be his last game, Scales bid farewell to the fans.

That, is according to The 42. It comes less than 24 hours after The Irish Examiner reported that a fee had been agreed for 23-year-old Scales.

The newspaper said Celtic had agreed a fee of £500,000 with Shamrock for Scales. A left-footed centre-back, he can play in the middle or on the left.

He is also a goal threat. Scales has five goals and seven assists in 51 games for Shamrock, who are the current champions of the Irish Premier League.

Scales to Celtic: Bargain for player with potential, yet unproven

Scales has plenty of potential and while he is already 23, he is still learning his craft with just over 150 appearances at professional level.

A young 23, Scales has plenty of learning left to do. But quickly becoming one of Shamrock’s best players, Scales is certainly worth the outlay.

Versatile, a goal threat from defence, solid in the air – Scales covers two positions that Celtic really need to improve. Centre-back and left-back.

Thursday night showed Celtic have a lack of cover at left-back, after Greg Taylor went off. Carl Starfelt was guilty of another mistake at centre-back.

Scales could be diamond, unearthed from the gem for a bargain fee. He has the potential and the current quality to improve Celtic’s side.
