The Mail claim Celtic have tried to sign £8million-rated Sheffield United ace George Baldock on loan – but the Blades only want a permanent exit. The right-back was excellent for Sheffield United last season but after relegation, he could leave. Celtic face competition for his signature, too.
Baldock, 28, was a regular for Sheffield United in the Premier League during 2019-20 and 2020-21 – before the Blades were relegated. He clocked up 70 top-flight appearances across those two seasons. But now, his future is in doubt – having entered the final 12 months of his current contract.
Celtic have been strongly linked with Baldock. A previous report says they are willing to pay £8million for him. But the new Mail report says that Celtic have tried to get him on loan – the Blades will only entertain a sale. Sean Dyche’s Burnley are keen, as are Greek Super League winners Olympiakos.

Baldock would be a good Celtic signing, but at £8m?
Baldock is a Premier League proven right-back that is as effective going forward, as he is defensively. In his 140 games for Sheffield United, he produced 14 goal involvements – scoring four and creating 10. While those numbers are not enormous, half of those 140 came in the Premier League.
He is a solid right-back, but given he is in the final year of his contract – the Blades are under pressure to sell. If they want some cash for his signature, he will have to go this summer. With this in mind, is he worth £8million? No. But the two parties could surely agree a fee of around £5million.
