Report: Celtic add Premier League club's 38-year-old to summer shortlist
Sky Sports claim that Celtic have added Watford veteran Ben Foster to their shortlist, as Ange Postecoglou desperately looks for a new goalkeeper. Foster, an eight-time England international, is currently preparing for Premier League football after promotion. But Celtic could lure him north.
Foster, 38, is in the final 12 months of his contract at Watford. During 2020-21, he started the campaign as Watford’s first-choice goalkeeper but was replaced by Daniel Bachmann between the sticks. He clocked up just 23 outings and it is likely that Bachmann will continue ahead of Foster.
Celtic are reportedly in talks to sign Tottenham goalkeeper Joe Hart, but Foster has now emerged as another option. It remains to be seen if ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Foster would even require a fee. But the veteran goalkeeper is of interest to Celtic as Postecoglou eyes a goalkeeper.
7 Footballers Who REJECTED England Call-Ups
Celtic can surely do better than Foster…
Foster is a good goalkeeper, of that there is no doubt. But is he really the answer for Celtic? At 38 years of age, he simply cannot be. Hart is pushing it at 34. The only player that is 38 years old Celtic should be considering is Hearts icon Craig Gordon – who of course, played 242 times for Celtic.
Celtic need to find themselves a solution, and while Foster is that for a season at most – they need one that is more long-term. The fact he has dropped out of the Watford side is more evidence that Celtic can do better. If the Hoops got Foster and Hart, then that is a much better move.
