According to L’Equipe, Arsenal and Everton have been offered the chance to sign Thomas Lemar from Atletico Madrid this summer.

The Gunners have been very active in the transfer window so far. Mikel Arteta has signed young Marquinhos, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Gabriel Jesus, while the Spaniard confirmed last night that Oleksandr Zinchenko will be joining the club as well.

That’s excellent business and Edu Gaspar deserves a ton of credit. However, the Gunners aren’t done just yet, and a new winger still seems to be on the agenda after Arsenal failed with their attempts to sign Raphinha.

The Gunners would love a new top-quality wide player to come in this summer, but Lemar isn’t going to be the one.

Thomas Lemar offered to Arsenal and Everton

In 2018, Atletico Madrid decided to splash £52.7 million to sign Lemar from Monaco (Guardian). He was expected by many people to be a huge hit in Spain, but things haven’t quite gone to plan.

In four seasons, Lemar has played 142 times for Atleti, but has managed to score just nine goals. That’s not enough for a player who cost so much money, which is why the Spanish giants tried to move him on.

With his current contract expiring at the end of next season, Atletico Madrid reportedly offered Lemar to Arteta’s Arsenal and Frank Lampard’s Everton, but both clubs decided against signing him.

As a result, he has now been offered a new contract that sees his wages drop down by 50 per cent. The report claims that Lemar, who was once branded as an ‘excellent player’ by Julian Nagelsmann, has decided to accept that deal as he hasn’t been able to find another club.

Arsene Wenger once offered £92m to sign him

Arsene Wenger was never really backed with outrageous amounts of money when he was at the helm at Arsenal. However, five years ago, the Frenchman was allowed to lodge a humongous bid to sign Lemar.

Sky Sports reported back in August 2017 that Arsenal, after weeks of negotiations, tabled an eye-watering £92 million bid to sign Lemar from then-Ligue 1 champions Monaco.

Wenger was a huge fan of the French winger and the Ligue 1 side even accepted the Gunners’ bid. However, Lemar decided against a transfer that summer, and Arsenal missed out.

Looking back at it now, Arsenal fans will surely be glad that their club didn’t sign Lemar, whose career in La Liga has been extremely underwhelming since he moved there.
